During Diwali, the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped throughout the country. The goddess of prosperity, fertility, and wealth is said to have chosen Lord Vishnu as her husband on Diwali night.

Aside from being a night full of songs, dance, cards, and fireworks, Diwali is also marked by another much-welcome tradition: gifting and enjoying mithai (sweets). Friends, family, neighbors exchange colorful boxes of delicacies, most of which are traditional Indian sweets.
Origination
There are so many stories associated with Diwali but one of the most important stories in Hindu mythology is that the day marks the return of Lord Rama, his wife Devi Sita, and brother Lakshmana to their homeland of Ayodhya after 14 years in exile. Villagers use festive lights and other decorations to light Lord Rama's path after he defeats the demon king Ravana.
